Scenario

Alan has been involved in the construction industry for 30 years, having completed an apprenticeship in bricklaying after leaving school in 1988, and then continuing to work as a self-employed general builder and property developer.  More recently, Alan been responsible for managing increasingly larger construction sites and in 2014 this led to him joining Newpool Construction Ltd, a groundworks and civil engineering company.

Learner Journey

Alan initially began working with Newpool Construction Ltd as a site manager on a complex residential development, before gradually accepting increased responsibility for additional sites that the company was also involved with. Though his previous experience in building and property development had provided him with an extensive practical knowledge of most aspects of domestic construction and renovation works, he increasingly found himself in direct contact with architects, engineers, surveyors, estimators and other senior managers who were representing the Clients interests. Alan felt that he needed to supplement his “hands-on” skills with a more formal qualification, which would allow him to better understand aspects of the construction industry that he previously had little exposure to.

Alan felt that the directed learning method of delivery offered by Geason Training for the NVQ and HNC best suited his personal circumstances, as it would allow him to take responsibility for allocating the considerable study time required around existing work, personal and family commitments.

Results

With the help of his tutor, Ian Blackhall, Alan has made considerable progress towards his initial goal of gaining a more complete understanding of all aspects of the construction process. This has contributed towards him feeling more qualified to communicate with any of the Client’s representatives, and has also directly led to him being offered a permanent office-based role working as an estimator and surveyor for Newpool Construction Ltd.

Words from the Learner

“Personally, I have relished my study time over the last 2 years, as it has allowed me to gain a far clearer overview of the roles and intentions of the many different people employed within the construction industry.  I would certainly recommend this opportunity to both learn and personally develop, to anyone who finds themselves in a similar position to myself within the Construction Industry.”
