The Apprenticeship Levy will become available in May 2017 – are you ready?

With the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy drawing nearer, it is crucial that employers are equipped with a levy plan to fully utilise their funds.

New research conducted by City & Guilds indicates that employers are not making the necessary preparations for the forthcoming levy system. With participation from 500 senior decision-makers; responsible for training or apprenticeship budgets within their organisations only 33% of respondents felt fully informed about the changes that would be brought about by the Apprenticeship Levy, while 23% were not aware of the new levy system at all. It was also discovered that 59% of the respondents indicated that they do intend to recruit more apprentices throughout this coming year although 15% of this sample did acknowledge that budget cuts to other recruitment schemes such as trainee-ships and internships, may be required to pay for the levy.

Based on current data collected by CITB, about 1% of employers registered with CITB (750 companies at group level) will need to pay towards the levy. However, the apprenticeship reforms will impact on construction employers of all sizes also stating that 56% of employees will continue to pay the same amount under the new levy.
