Trailblazer Ryan achieves a distinction in his apprenticeship

Hardworking apprentice Ryan Warren has embodied the spirit of ‘blazing a trail’ by completing his Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship before his end date and achieving a distinction.

Ryan, who has been an employee of Landmarc Support Services since January 2016, had a background in construction before gaining employment but never had the opportunity to gain formal qualifications which support the trade skills he had gained.  Keen to develop within his career and build on his existing industry experience, Ryan jumped at the chance to complete an apprenticeship with Geason Training – A Speedy Business.  With the support and encouragement of his colleagues, Ryan pursued a Level 2 apprenticeship in Property Maintenance.

During his apprenticeship, Ryan was seconded to the Maintenance team and grabbed the opportunity to learn from the maintenance technicians with both hands.  He was able to develop new skills from trades such as building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and has also been involved in a maintenance repairs project.

Ryan’s line manager is particularly impressed with his achievement and the work he has put into developing his fabric maintenance abilities.

Following the support he received throughout his apprenticeship from his colleagues and Timothy Newsome, his trainer at Geason Training,  Ryan feels he has become a more well-rounded Property Maintenance Operative and able to undertake building fabric repairs.

Ryan commented,

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. Apprenticeships really are a fantastic way to learn and I’m so proud that I managed to complete my course in the shortest time possible and achieve a distinction. I’m certainly putting my new skills into practice and have been asked to support a major project to refurbish one of our urban training areas. This will really help me to get some more experience so that I can continue to develop my career in this area.”

With learners at the heart of everything we do, we are always excited to offer support and guidance as our learners progress and develop throughout their career. Not one to rest on his laurels, Ryan has already embarked on the next stage of his learning journey by starting his second qualification – a Level 2 apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery.

You Said – We Did

At Geason Training we put the Learner Experience at the heart of everything we do so we ask for feedback on a regular basis and treat every point seriously.

In September 2018, we reached out to 302 live learners in total via telephone and the results were recorded directly onto Survey Monkey.

This was to supplement the on-programme and induction surveys conducted throughout 2017 -18 academic year. The survey reached out to 302 live learners in total.

We were delighted to hear that 94% of the learners surveyed felt that they had learned new skills relevant to their job during the time they spent on their course.

The image below highlights some of the actions we have implemented since undertaking the survey such as recruiting a Customer Service Manager to co-ordinate information to and from learners.

We value the feedback our learners provide and use it to ensure we are constantly developing and improving our services to align with their needs.

The Apprenticeship Levy FAQ’s – Resolved

For your benefit we have highlighted some of the common misconceptions held by businesses regarding the Apprenticeship Levy. This is aimed at helping employers gain a better understanding of what is to come.

Must apprentices be new starters?

This is untrue. The funding you may claim can be used to up-skill existing staff via an apprenticeship. It is up to you, the employer, whether you would like to hire new, less-experienced team members or simply fund further development within your existing workforce. It allows you to either train the a potential employee to suit your business needs or help an existing employee climb up the ladder of their career, becoming more qualified and more capable of a higher level role. We have apprenticeship courses from NVQ’s to Degree level Higher Apprenticeships.

Must apprentices be aged between 16 and 25 years old?

This is not the case. Most apprentices in employment are aged between 16 and 25 years, however the Apprenticeship Levy funding does not restrict you to employee and apprentice within this age category. In reality, the funding allows you to train anyone over the age of 16 – with no upper age limit.

Are university graduates favoured by employers?

This is false as an apprentice can be any person, from any background with any previous qualifications. It is common for apprentices to have had a change in their career or looking for a new field to develop their skills in. They may have graduated recently, they may have achieved their last qualification years ago, it simply doesn’t matter. Your current staff know current procedures and have previous experience and background knowledge within your industry and will potentially be more effective than hiring a new inexperienced employee.

Are apprenticeship programmes costly?

No matter what the circumstances, if you are a large employer (exceeding a £3m PAYE bill) you will have to pay the compulsory levy equivalent of 0.5%. The options are doing nothing about it, or claim back the funding through training new employees or up-skilling your existing workforce. Apprenticeships are a comprehensive, long-term training solution which has enormous benefits to your business and you will have already paid for it through the levy, therefore no additional payments are required depending on the scope of your programme. Additionally, the government are willing to provide a 10% bonus on all funds that are applied to your apprenticeship service account. This means that for each £1 deposit into the account, you have £1.10 to spend for enhancing your workforce.

This is just a few of the many common misconceptions regarding the Apprenticeship Levy. To make sure you are clear on the implications of the levy and your funding opportunities, speak with our expert team today on 0330 088 9596 or use our contact form on www.geasontraining.co.uk.
