Degree Apprenticeship programmes are a relatively-new but rapidly rising and evolving aspect of education within the UK. Degree Apprenticeships combine fully paid working along with part-time university study, with learners receiving at least an apprentice’s minimum wage. Embarking on a Degree Apprenticeship programme means that apprentices are full-time employed for one to six years, covering at least 30 hours of work per week – owning a full-time employment status as opposed to student status.

Apprentices that are undergoing Degree Apprenticeships participate in practical on-the-job training whilst also studying a paid-for Bachelors or Masters degree at with their training provider and partner university. In order to complete this type of programme, the employer must arrange a flexible study method such as distance learning, block mode learning or blended learning. So, who can undergo a Degree-level Apprenticeship? Avoiding common false beliefs, anyone over the age of 16 years can complete a programme at this level. Degree Apprenticeships are primarily targeted at 18 to 19-year-old school leavers looking for an alternative route to gaining a degree – avoiding tuition fees and student debt. Degree Apprenticeships can also be used to up-skill existing staff that have competed the previous qualification required to move on to degree-level programmes.

With the Apprenticeship Levy, employers paying levy contributions will pay for the costs of Degree Apprenticeships from their digital account with a 10% ‘top-up’ from the government. Non-levy paying employers will receive 90% of the total training costs covered by the government.
